By popular demand (well, okay, so it was just Carrie, but that’s good enough for me!) I have decided to write about a typical day for me and maybe how I get everything done that I have to do…if I can figure it out myself. There are some days I wonder how it all gets done. I think the simplest answer is that I cannot stand being bored. I’m a Gemini, so boredom and I do not mix. Therefore, I keep myself as busy as possible. Here is what I did today, Sunday, the “day of rest”.
7:00 am: My three year old son wakes us up by getting into bed with me and my husband. We spend about a half an hour cuddling and giggling as a family.
7:30 am: I’m up and grading papers. This weekend I have about 520 papers to grade to give back tomorrow so the students can study for their quiz on Tuesday. Luckily, my wonderful husband cooks breakfast for us all.
9:00 am: I help my son take his bath before church. While he’s playing in the water, I’m still grading papers.
9:30 am: My husband is done with his shower and takes over with the kid so I can hop in the shower and get ready for church.
10:15 am: We hop in the truck (darn it’s cold out today!) and go to church which starts at 10:30. I take some papers with me to finish grading as my husband drives the 4 miles to the church.
11:30 am: Church is over and we go to my in-laws’ house for lunch.
2:00 pm: My son has worn himself out playing at Grandma and Grandpa’s, so we are able to convince him to go home.
2:15 pm: I hop in the car and head to the city to refill a prescription.
2:20 pm: I drop off mail to my in-laws that came to our house by mistake (we forgot to take it to church).
2:40 pm: I realize I need gas, so I make a stop on the way to the city and fill up.
3:00 pm: I finally made it to the pharmacy and kill about 10 minutes as I wait for them to fill my prescription.
3:15 pm: The pills are ready, so I pay for my purchases and head back home.
4:00 pm: I get home and put away the things I bought. My husband and son are both asleep on the couch.
4:15 pm: I hop on the treadmill for my daily walk. Some of my friends say I never take time for myself, and maybe I don’t take enough, but I do spend at least 3o minutes a day on my treadmill and just watch some TV. Today I decide to watch Hogan Knows Best reruns (that I haven’t seen before) on VH1.
4:45 pm: I finish up my 30 minutes and hop in the shower again.
5:20 pm: I am now dressed and have a few minutes to check my email and work on discussion questions for my Master’s Degree class (only 2 more weeks to go until I have my MA!) Both my husband and son are awake now and my son snuggles up next to me and I play his favorite songs on my computer as I work.
5:45 pm: Next up I update http://www.evangelinelilly.ca with a new blog post and upload new photos into the gallery. I also clean up the forum to get rid of some newly registered spammers (as well as clean out 23 comments in the blogs that were all spam…grrr.)
6:00 pm: Tonight is our “holiday party” for my second job (I work part time at the Jockey Outlet store). It’s been cancelled twice already due to weather, so we’re finally getting it in. I wrap my present and leave the house to get there on time.
6:20 pm: I arrive at the restaurant and meet up with my coworkers.
8:30 pm: I say my goodbyes and head for home.
8:50 pm: I get home and put on my pajamas. I then start typing up notes for tomorrow’s classes that I have to teach. My son is already in bed and my wonderful husband has already picked up the house because our bi-weekly cleaning lady comes tomorrow.
9:15 pm: I again work on my Master’s Degree class work to try to catch up a little bit. I have an 8-10 page paper due in two weeks that I haven’t started yet, so I get a plan for what I’m going to write about and start reading the instructions.
9:30 pm: I review a few sites for the Webby Awards. In between sites loading, I check Collective Ink and Reality Shack as well as a few other sites I frequent. I add another one of my students as a friend on Facebook and see if I have any messages on MySpace.
10:00 pm: Here I am, writing about my day on my blog. Whew! I’m tired just looking at all of that! I will go to bed within the next hour (my husband started some laundry and I need to switch it to the dryer before I go to bed).
Here is my to-do list for tomorrow:
I will get up around 5:30 am and do 15 minutes on the treadmill while my husband is in the shower. I usually leave for school about 6:30 am and drop my son off at daycare. I will arrive at school about 7:15 am. I need to make some copies and transparencies before classes start. I will teach until 3:10 and grade more papers every chance I get (I STILL have more to grade!). I have students coming in after school tomorrow to make up tests. I will probably leave there around 4 pm and pick my son up from daycare. We’ll get home around 5 pm and I will get on the treadmill for about 30 minutes. Then I will shower and start dinner. After dinner, my son and I will read a book and probably play Memory or do a puzzle. Then I will work some on my classes and check my email and all of my sites. I have to start proofreading the science lessons I just got the gig doing. I’ll then get things ready for school the next day and grade some more or type up notes. I also need to answer some emails and help plan for HOBY (I am the corporate board president of Iowa HOBY).
No one said my life is glamorous, but I’m still going. I am blessed to have such a supportive husband. I couldn’t do half of what I do without him. My son is also wonderful at entertaining himself. I do always make time to do something with him everyday (usually playing a game or reading a book). I think my secret is that I prioritize and do not do more at a time than I have to do that day. I’m the master of multi-tasking and need constant stimulation. I’m just now realizing that I can make some money with my restlessness by filling that time with writing. Hopefully I can keep the balance.
